Unprocessed Foods via The Mediterranean Diet

By Ted Parsons

The Mediterranean diet is rich in monounsaturated fats that are derived from nuts and olive oil. People of the Mediterranean region only prefer the use of monounsaturated fats since they are healthy for the heart and general well-being. If you are unable to adjust to a fat-free diet prescribed by many dietitians, then you can try this diet since it involves moderate consumption of healthy fats.

The Mediterranean diet is recommended by nutritionists because of its numerous health benefits including weight loss. This diet successfully reduces the bad cholesterol levels of our body because it is a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Also, it promotes a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle, all through whole foods that are natural products of our planet and provide us with everything we need to live a healthy life...without the use of supplements.

Apart from using this healthy oil for their cooking, they eat a diet that is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, low in red meat and refined sugars and rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. If you are not residing in a Mediterranean region, you may find it difficult to find whole food ingredients that are usually used in this diet outside of farmer's markets. However, you can still enjoy the goodness of this diet by consuming the main food products of this diet, which are vegetables and fruits.

Fresh fruits, vegetables, breads, pasta, legumes, beans, grains, potatoes, couscous and bulgur wheat are some of the foods that are included in a daily diet by the people of the Mediterranean region. The diet pyramid followed by the Mediterranean residents is a helpful tool for understanding the basics of this whole foods diet plan.

Adjusting to a Mediterranean diet is pretty easy. You can enjoy any types of food as long as they are healthy and consumed in moderation. This includes poultry and fish. If you are a vegetarian you can use nuts and beans as they are a rich source of proteins. If you are on a weight loss program, just remember to eat moderately, since large portions are the big killer.

The typical American diet is rich in red meat, deep-fried foods, processed fats and starch. Corn oil is also consumed excessively, which is a saturated unhealthy fat. Corn oil has an ability to fatten livestock. Red meat, which is restricted in the Mediterranean diet, is lavishly consumed by the Americans. On the flip side, you won't see fat people in the Mediterranean region because all they eat are fruits, veggies and healthy fats. If you don't believe the science, take a trip and check it out for yourself, because at the end of the day you can either live a long, healthy life or you can continue being a sick, overweight statistic.
