Suggestions on How to Add a Regular Fitness Routine to Your Life

By James Steele

It goes without saying that the quality of your life and your health and well-being all depend on how fit you are. The machine age has created a population of people who are inactive and lazy. You cannot afford to let yourself get lazy or too comfortable, because that approach will hurt you. If you think you have to train like a marathon runner in order to be fit, you couldn't be more mistaken. A perfectly adequate, pared down fitness program that includes the essential elements doesn't demand a lot of your time. You will most likely be pleasantly surprised when you see how your body responds once you begin. When you see how responsive your body and muscles are, you will probably want to do even more.

Have you been reading in the newspapers or online about some of the great physical feats that senior citizens have been achieving? Here's an example of what you can aspire to. Fauja Singh, a British Citizen, recently completed the 2011 Waterfront Marathon in Toronto. Fauja Singh is 100 years old. Many senior citizens - in their 60s and 70s and even older - are more fit and healthy than men and women half their age. Your age is no excuse - or block - to you achieving the best shape and fitness level you've ever had. As you probably already know, your health care provider must give you the green light before you begin any fitness routine and you must adapt what you do to your physical condition and age when you start. And so, proceed slow and easy. There's no hurry.

The one thing you want to avoid is depriving your body of much needed nutrients. Your body can go into what is known as starvation mode if you don't give it what it needs to function properly. You will find that you are lacking in sufficient energy to get through your day if you don't fuel your body adequately. Seasoned exercisers have learned to trust their intuition by listening to what their body is telling them. You body, as strange as it may sound to you, is always telling you what it needs. You just need to learn how to pay attention to yourself. And you will be the one who benefits. By becoming aware, you can sidestep a potential injury with ease. Your intuition will guide you into taking the correct action for whatever situation arises. Instead of being macho and pushing through inappropriate pain and causing further damage, do the right thing and stop. According to what your body is telling you, you should take steps to alleviate the problem or stop altogether.

The type of exercises you choose will play an important part in how much rest and repair you will need to recover from each exercise session. Regardless, it is extremely important that you give your muscle sufficient time to repair before you stress them again.

Remember, warming up your muscle groups by stretching is crucial if you want to prevent injury to your body. And, also, at the end of your fitness workout, you must do cool-down stretches. If you try to take shortcuts, you leave yourself liable to injury. If you do bodybuilding or weight lifting it is even more important that you stretch your muscles before you begin. It's no secret that lifting weights shortens your muscles. The bottom line is that it is important for you to take the necessary time to ensure that your body is fit and healthy.
