Kettlebell Training Injury Prevention

By Michelle Moncrieffe

A great method of muscle development and strengthening is kettlebell training, but be aware that working with kettlebells has accompanying risks. When exercisers are not correctly educated on the how to perform these workouts they can be injured. Working out with kettlebells is more challenging than most people think.

I used to work out with kettlebells in college as part of my soccer training. Instead of working out with free weights, our strength and conditioning coach introduced us to kettlebells. Our strength coach believed that kettlebell training would benefit us better than working out in the gym using more traditional weightlifting techniques. Kettlebells are supposed to help increase your overall endurance, balance, agility, and coordination. The muscle groups targeted by training with kettlebells include the core, legs, and shoulders.

Speed, endurance and agility are vital components of a successful soccer team. The effects of kettlebell training are achieved faster than with power lifting. This method of weight training translates well on the soccer field. Soccer players have no need to bulk up unlike wrestlers and football players, relying instead on their strong, lean muscles.

Due to the fact that most of the team was used to working out with free weights and the techniques that are related to traditional weight training, some injuries did happen. Proper form is highly stressed in kettlebell training. Because they require such precision in form, a properly licensed trainer is required. Our strength trainer was not as knowledgeable in the field as he should have been. Since he was only slightly knowledgeable we had some players experience back and leg strain.

Advanced kettlebell training requires more explosive movement than standard weightlifting training requires. Moreover, there is an abundance of swinging motions that heavily involve the back. When an athlete is not correctly educated on how to begin kettlebell training injuries there is a heightened risk of injury. Injuries can also occur when athletes do not fully commit themselves to learning the skills required to perform kettlebell training safely. All precautions should be taken to avoid preventable injuries.

Some methods of risk prevention are consulting a licensed kettlebell specialist, stretching properly, and properly preparing for your kettlebell training regime. Educated forays into kettlebell training yield effective results as well as decreasing the risk of injury.
