Paying Attention To Nutrition Can Be Delicious!

By Meredith Henner

Whether you've struggled in the past or not, you can experience an optimum level of health and well being by becoming very knowledgeable in nutrition. Once you have a firm grasp on what foods you should be eating and what foods you should be avoiding, you can move closer to the weight and level of fitness you've always dreamed of.

In order to become a true nutritional master, you must start reading labels closely. The advertising label may claim that the food is a healthier option because it is "fat free" or contains"zero trans fats." And if you don't turn the container over and read the rest of the nutritional facts you may be inclined to buy it. But upon further inspection you will notice that these healthier options are usually the ones that contain the highest amounts of sugar. Be aware and read.

Potassium is fantastic for you so be sure you eat enough of it. Potassium lowers blood pressure and helps protect your heart. Eating foods like tomatoes, sweet potatoes and bananas will ensure you get enough potassium into your diet.

A good way to avoid unhealthy foods like candy, cakes and cookie is to not stock your kitchen with them in the first place. If you do not have bad foods available, you can not eat them.

One nutrition mistake most people make is that they try to cut out all unhealthy foods at once. But your mind will think it's being punished this way. Take sugary drinks, for instance. Instead of going cold turkey all at once, try just cutting your intake in half and little by little cut more out until you no longer consume them.

One easy way to make sure you're getting enough nutrients into your diet is to make sure you eat a rainbow every day. This means eating mostly colorful fruits and veggies. Make big salads for lunch and dinner, and not salads consisting only of some lettuce and a few cucumber slices, but a salad loaded with tons of vegetables, avocado, nuts, and drizzle a little olive oil, salt and pepper. It's delicious and feeds your whole body.

Food as a reward is not the best nutritional habit to instill in your child. Try offering attention instead. Show them your love with hugs and kisses rather than chocolate, ice cream or donuts. You do not want your child to begin to associate food with affection and love or as a reward for doing what they need to do.

I hope you'll follow the guidelines in this article to eat healthier. But these tips are only the beginning. If you really want to experience what being fit and healthy feels like, then read all you can about proper nutrition.
