Diabetes Essential Facts

By Jacob Waeetane

The thought of diabetes creeps most people out, not because it is a contagious disease, which it isn't, but because of the fact that it's quite a serious medical condition.

Diabetes mellitus, abbreviated as DM, is a set of related diseases in which the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar, more specifically the glucose in the blood. This condition gives rise to different unfavourable changes in the body such as the following.

There are a number of symptoms of diabetes, but firstly, there's fatigue. In diabetes, the body is no longer capable of utilizing glucose for energy and begins to metabolize fat which requires additional energy to pull off which leads to fatigue.

One more symptom is losing weight suddenly which is related to inability to use the calories present in the food eaten. Also, they excrete much sugar and water due to excessive urination. These are the reasons why even if they eat a lot of food, they still don't gain weight.

A more common symptom is polydipsia or excessive thirst. This symptom arises because the high sugar content in the blood alarms the brain to dilute it, by telling the body to drink more and more water. Another reason why people become extremely thirsty is due to excessive urination.

Then what follows is this constant and excessive urination or medically known as polyuria. This occurs in the body's attempt to shed off some of the excess sugar in the blood.

Another thing that's excessive with people with diabetes is eating or polyphagia. It occurs because the increased amounts of insulin triggers the body to ingest more food.

Part of the symptoms is poor wound healing. This is due to the fact that high sugar levels hinder the proper functioning of the WBCs that shelter the body from bacteria. So once they are not doing their job properly, bacteria can thrive in the wound, halting healing and causing infection.

Finally, there's symptoms connected with the person's mind. When sugar levels reach extreme heights, the mental status of the person becomes affected. This leads to agitation, unexplained irritability, inattention, extreme lethargy and confusion.

These are all caused by so many intertwined factors that are called diabetes causes. These include a genetic inclination, the environment, lifestyle or a medical condition that has paved the way for diabetes to emerge.
